Bath Abbey Announces new Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music.

Bath Abbey is delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Field as the new Sub-Organist and Assistant Director of Music.

Adam is currently the organ scholar at Exeter Cathedral, where he is a member of the musical team who prepare and deliver seven choral services per week, which includes playing the organ and the training of the 40 cathedral choristers. Adam is a recent graduate of Selwyn College, Cambridge, where he held the Percy Young Senior Organ Scholarship and read Music, graduating with a double First.

At Bath Adam will play the magnificent Klais organ for all services accompanying the Abbey choirs and he will be directing the Melody Makers, a choir of children aged 6-11, and the adult Chamber Choir.

Huw Williams, Director of Music at Bath Abbey said “We are so excited to be welcoming Adam to join us at the Abbey. We were impressed by everything he did during interview. He already has a distinguished career at Exeter and Cambridge and we look forward to working with him later this year.”

Adam will begin his post fully in August, though he will be travelling to Bath between May and August to direct the Melody Makers and the Chamber Choir mid-week whilst he finishes his Scholarship at Exeter.

Adam said “I am thrilled to have been appointed to this role in Bath. I’m really looking forward to working with Guy, Huw and the team in such a thriving music department in a wonderful church and city. I was struck by how welcoming the community at the Abbey was at interview, and am anxious to be joining it soon.”

Adam is a very experienced musician already – at Cambridge he has played in concerts and services across the country and internationally, including live on BBC Radio 3 and on Radio 4.

Revd Mustard (Canon Precentor of Exeter Cathedral) said “We’re all delighted that Adam has been appointed to Bath Abbey. In the short time he has been in Exeter he has shown great commitment to our daily worship and has become well-liked by younger and older choristers alike. It’s always difficult to say goodbye to organ scholars, but we are thrilled he will be in Bath, and not too far from Devon!”

Adam has played the organ and piano for four professional recordings and at Cambridge, in his third year, he combined his duties at Selwyn with the organ scholarship for King’s Voices, King’s College’s mixed-voice choir, for whom he played Evensong once a week in its iconic chapel. As well as playing the organ, he has recently had his first composition published and tutors on singing courses with The Rodolfus Foundation and The Oxford and Cambridge Singing School.

The Rector of Bath Abbey, Revd Canon Guy Bridgewater said “We are very blessed by the excellent music at Bath Abbey and the work that the choirs do to bring people nearer to God. We look forward to getting to know Adam and his ministry in the Abbey.”
